This is raw, powerful, and deeply beautiful, Sarah. The extended metaphor of the tree is so well-crafted, each line peeling back another layer of inherited pain, survival, and revelation. I was especially struck by the moment of self-recognition: “obsessively ever yes, to win the trophy of God’s favour,” such honesty and vulnerability. And the ending, the quiet hope of the Gardener preparing to graft us anew, it left me with tears. A stunning piece. Thank you for writing, sharing your poem and story.

It was such an important revelation to me. No more feelings of superiority or pride. God has saved me out of what I was destined to become. I’m so blessed up could see the heart of these words.

I felt each realization and vibration as they hit. You kept us yearning for that final, beautiful couplet. I'll never tire of trees sharing the Gospel message!!

We all come from our own broken trees, and God is kind to do his grafting work over and over and over again 🙌🏻

I was really enjoying the mood but then a memory came back which altered the meaning, I'm sorry , it is a lovely poem though. My mother in law had a very tall conifer in her garden very close to the house. After some strong winds the tree had taken tiles off and so she decided she would have it reduced in size. Unable to afford it professionally Steve ( next door neighbour) and I climbed to the top and began cutting it back. Whilst we were doing this two travellers came to door asked Jean for £50 and they would take it down . One of them even started hacking at the tree. Steve and I were convinced they were going to bring it down with us still up it,😂

I like the metaphor of the tree and how this is worked throughout the poem. Thank you

I can see why my poem led you to that memory; glad you made it down the tree😅
